The amount of quotables in this show is amazing. Robson Green thinks a US remake of his noughties ITV series Wire in the Blood could be "brilliant". And Kima, would she really be snitching on them? His entire life he had nothing and no one then ends up back on the street with a needle in his arm. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Perhaps one on the books it is based on might warm me up to it. This statement is meant to include: Mark Letheren(DI Kevin Jeffries); Emma Handy (DC Paula McIntyre) and Peter Sullivan (ACC Paul Eden). Ohhh, and the commissioner and Senator Davis, you might as well have been talking about our infamous Marion Barry and his cronies all over the place. I did enjoy everything else about Season 5. This show is so brilliant, so uniquely American, such a mind-altering and contemplative rumination on the powerful pull of the system FUCK, I LOVE THE WIRE!!!!!!!!!!! Robson Green is a favourite of mine which is why I really wanted to love this show. To wonder whether anyone would be disciplined for cursing in a newsroom, or why they made the top editor wear those suspenders, or whether it was a clich to have a fabricator driving the overt plot? I wish I attended that panel, and heard the insight Im sure you provided. That said, I thank you for the bitter pill. I learned more from two weeks of practical work, than an entire year of overpaid theory, and eventually switched to English, because I couldnt stand a style that, to me, was tantamount to lying. We certainly expected more attention from the media. And a couple of others at alternative weeklies figured it out again, perhaps, because theyre less vested than everyone at the big, vulnerable dailies. He seems so confident that each person is the perpetrator then half way through the interview says 'no it's not him' very annoying. I couldnt believe the level of writing and literary presence of this show. The port was referenced a couple of times but would have liked to have a bit more substance so it felt like it all fit. But what can you do? Everyone who complanes about season 5 is just mourning. When the Wire was first broadcast, in 2002, I decided not to watch it because of the hype. Almost everything in the show from the dialogue to the outcomes felt refreshingly believable. (Think "Cracker" meets "Inspector Morse" meets "CSI").There is a bookish, academic quality to Doctor Hill, without him being tweedy and standoffish (he's more human, and less lofty than Morse). I've enjoyed his first rate performances in two other series I've seen, and can't wait to see how his character's flirtation with D.I. This show leaves me completely speechless. the biggest feeling that I was left with was that of Newtons Third Law of Physics, the action-reaction law. That being said, I think what was really being pointed out here, is that the sorts who were under the feeling that the blacks were ruining the city, more or less knew quite well that such levels of corruption in the legal bodies was not limited by race, as Season 5 shows, and that just like w/ many of the black characters, many of the white characters benefit professionally for their lies, cover-ups and stat-jukings. I been expressing to folk since 2002 I gave up due to some of the most annoying characters I have seen written. I can dream sometimes, right? My plight feels similar to that of the increasingly-obsolete reporters you mentioned, rummaging through webpage-after-page of marketable impact junk to find substantial material worth digging into. Additionally though people point to the development of hyper-local news sites as a way of saying that local news isnt dead, these are often little more than blogs or advertising of businesses in the area rather than sustained critiques and investigations. Brilliant! While the Arab Spring was happening, the only thing you could find on news TV was tabloid coverage of a murder case. Over a television drama. You made an impact on me David. One of the best Crime drama/ Mystery Thriller TV shows ever made, Vivid, believable shows with a charismatic psychologist solving intriguing crimes, Twisted and gory, but I love Robson Green. The systemic problems of the DMV are way too deep and the people in charge are way too invested in their petty self-interests to ever have it another way. Im out. Americans are stupid ppl by and larger, they pretty much believe whatever we tell them Its like The Odyssey of Homer. Several years go by since Pulengs sister went missing. I love game of thrones (but its too quick imo), but The Wire is the best. What is most unfortunate is that your scathing and accurate critique of Washington D.Cs left armpit (with PG County being its right) and really the entire D.C. area will always be written off as great entertainment and remembered as one of the best shows ever on television. Cocaine Bear, the new action-comedy now in theaters, is based on a true story, but only barely. Crown me up and kneel, ya bitches. Season 5 was great. The film, which stars Anthony Mackie The setting and actors are British. I am writing my thesis on THE WIRE This argument strucked me when Omar died and no one noticed it in The Sun No institutional memory, no quality journalism. It ran for six seasons and I believe had some specials along the way. WebA clinical psychologist, Dr. Tony Hill, delves into his dark side to see into the minds of serial killers, to aid the police in solving their most difficult cases. 2) As for the WORST McNultys supercop character finally jumped the shark. The Mermaids Singing: Part 1: Directed by Andrew Grieve. Even more awesome is how you actually continued that same thread from one season to the next, taking one subject matter and examining it from all the angles that make up the context of the entire problem. Thank you so much for making The Wire, it ruined every other tv show. Carcetti seemed to both indirectly affirm the beliefs of the more racist/prejudiced white politicians that a white mayor who could possibly whiten up the administration, would weed out the corruption, and at the same time did his best to work with the black members of the citys congress, businesses, police force and school systems, etc. I found the season 2 a bit less interesting the first time, but I really dont know why, maybe because I was focused on characters like Avon etc, and the guys on the docks were less cool at first sight. I loved the show, its in my top 5 of all time and I cant imagine it going anywhere. And the depiction of the weak-willed, money-grubbing, ring-kissing top brass at papers was spot-on, too. Drug wars, territorial disputes, and the assassination of the citys largest drug importer manage to produce a brief inside the metro section that refers only to the slaying of a second-hand appliance store owner. But Ill get back to the journalism angle momentarily. When I say Im an addict to this show I honestly feel like the fiends depicted in the show that dont creep out of their addiction like Bubs happened to do. No television series has ever lived with me the way The Wire has. Having grown up on the southeast side of PG County inside the Beltway, I can tell you that The Wire was a hit right between the eyes. Painfully honest? BTW please make enough money to buy The Baltimore Sun and give it the love it so desperately needs. The newsroom story arc wasnt lost on me i believe some of the characters in the newsroom just didnt grip you as much as the other areas which makes it seem the weaker part. Omars death/Omar returning to Baltimore: We all wanted to see Omars last stand be in a bloody shootout with a high body count, but anyone paying attention to the story being told knew it wouldnt go down like that. you could give me! Thank you for this clue-in as well, I admit I missed most of it. The cutbacks, management of local papers by big out of town conglomerates and lack of attention on complex issues is something we see in the UK too. But life isnt like that. The first two, "Singing" and "Shadows" are adaptations of author Val McDermid's books; This is a taut British crime drama very much in the "Cracker" mould. It continued doing so into the present decade as the Tribune Company followed the Times-Mirror buyouts with even more ruthless abandon. My original ranking was honestly 4-1-3-5-2 with my first watch. The show and books are dark and twisted. I know that is a meta-narrative that some people find credible, but I could as easily and as credibly argue that the meta-narrative itself stems from newspaper critics who were too close and too sensitive to the overall critique. Given the corruption in the Baltimore you portrayed, it isnt hard to imagine an offender being released for even more serious charges. What really made Season 5 for me was Gus and the newsroom in general. There's something to be said for being able to binge an entire show from episode one to final episode when cancelled. Whatever you say, arthouse. In series 1-3, Hermione Norris played Detective Inspecter/Chief Inspecter Carol Jordan of Bradford CID, who managed to rein Tony's scattered abilities and make sense of them. I wondered what you thought of new local titles which seek subscriptions from the community as well as community involvement in their storytelling. From the Huffington Post, March 17, 2008 Like another commenter, I only noticed the Prop Joe story being missed/overshadowed by the Sun. The acting is excellent, but I find this show way too unsubtle, lurid, and melodramatic. Omar and Prop Joe were the last good guys among the bad guys and both of them had to go down, while Snoop the Psycho Bitch who deserved at least a few weeks of good torture gets off easy with a single shot to the head. Politicians then took credit for the limited gains that were, of course, unsustainable as the students aged into middle school. On my third or fourth watch through season two became my second favorite season, after season 4 of course. And why would carcetti suddenly give them all the money? I would have liked to have seen more scenes with randy & neymond though just to make it feel like they hadnt been forgotten especially as Michael & dookie didnt even mention them by name about same with nick sabotka maybe a conversation about the docks with someone after abusing the mayor & kracheck I like how it felt like a big open world & people could bump into each other. In an interview Robson Green said the phrase wire in the blood was taken to mean a genetic kink, something impure and unusual in the blood, that leads to the But the fifth-season story arc began with a wonderful bit of adversarial reporting on deadline good, clean newspapering it was. Wed get a rant or two from whoever he screwed over, then next episode or season all is forgiven, forgotten and everyones back to good ole Jimmy again. Politically sensitive casework was butchered or pursued selectively by political interests and departmental indifference. It is time-consuming, expensive, deliberate and demanding. How is Baltimore under Trumps term. Particularly the fat guy in homicide (who pissed me off so much I blocked out the characters name from memory) who would rather jerk off behind his desk to titty mags and suck off the government nipple while the whole city goes up in flames. I agree with the message of Season 5, just not the execution. Producer Chris Miller explains why. If you took out subjective arguments about popular entertainment, the nation would free up a lot of bandwidth and many repetitive stress injuries would be avoided. -And Herc? Done very tastefully. Really? Burns is fuckin awesome. You wanna say who cares, the story sucked? School principals in Baltimore and elsewhere in Maryland were obliged to teach test questions to pump scores at the expense of meaningful curricula. In particular, I admired how each character was so fully realized within their part of the story arc. I just binge-watched the last 3 seasons after slowly going through 1 & 2 and I feel regret that I almost missed out on this amazing thing that started basically a decade ago when I was just starting high school. Or the way alma glossed over Omars deathI had a feeling like if she woulda mentioned his name, gus wouldve immediately recognized it and said no-heart anthonys brother? The more honest assessment is that it doesnt matter where I stand, or where Ed Burn stands, or what I think. There was some love in there for the ink-stained wretches. The only story that I noticed that the newspaper missed was when they mentioned Prop Joe. In the end, Carcetti, despite being white, was not able to avoid the same trappings of stat-juking number games and political favoritism as his predecessor, Royce, or the mayor before that. We told the precise story we wished to tell and what happened was supposed to happen. When there is an ensemble cast and crew that work their hardest to put out the best product possible, it makes viewing a very satisfying activity. But for all of it to amount to a forest-and-tree farce? I found Wire in the Blood purely by accident and I am now a die-hard fan. Uncensored. If I didnt know the show was set in Baltimore it just as easily could have been set in Lanham, Capitol Heights, District Heights, Temple Hills, Forestville. S5 ran him off a cliff. This makes for some truly unusual and amusing situations, that help bring levity to the gruesome crimes he investigates. | True, the top editor had to get up on a desk amid the deluge of the internet and the declines in circulation and advertising. David, let me first congratulate you on making one of the most riveting series to have ever graced the global stage. Note: This article contains spoilers for the entire first series of Blood. But what is particularly interesting is, aside from McNulty, many of the white characters in the season engage in almost the same amount and level of corrupted games as their black counterparts, in some cases moreso. No-one looked at him twice.". Though he shows remarkable insight into the actions of the violent and deranged, he also displays that phenomenal lack of social consciousness that is particular to geniuses and artists (as in "Yes, I just invented nuclear fission, but no, I didn't know I was supposed to wear socks and shoes to this award ceremony."). Interesting article. Maybe an education magazine writes a column on inncr-city curricula, or a libertarian website revisits the idea of drug decriminalization. Otherwise this character seemed to constantly walk between the raindrops rarely suffering real consequences for his selfishness. There were three full-length movies: "The Mermaid's Singing", "Shadows Rising", and "Justice Painted Blind". The Wire is my favorite show of all time, but Season 5 was definitely the weakest. | The clues about The Sun missing important stories are there in plain sight. I dragged it past sarcasm, past cynicism, and all the way to balls-out snide. It features a crime-weary psychotherapist who is part profiler, part detective, part forensics expert. I confess I thought that journalism was still self-aware enough to get it, that enough collective consciousness of the crafts highest calling remained, that reporters still worried about what their newspapers were missing. Web"Wire in the Blood" is the story of Dr.Tony Hill (Robson Green), a slightly eccentric clinical psychologist who works part time with the police force of Bradford, England. Thats it. I guess I understood it was there in some sense but initially the theme I was focused on were the institutional problems in the newsroom that are so similar to the problems in other institutions featured in the series. Thanks for the reply. Because the thing I cant leave alone, the thing that makes me giddy as a schoolgirl is this: Whatever else I am a traitorous apostate to newsprint, the angriest hack in television, a kicker of small dogs you must acknowledge that I am now, also, the newly crowded King of Meta. Nothing against Robson himself but his character annoys me. Or are you just that pissed and depressed about the world that you cant help but force your misery on your viewers? Another Silence Of The Lambs/Cracker knock-off, without the storylines, I'm afraid. I realize that this is ten years too late to be of any practical use, but I just thought Id throw it out there. Anyway, for me, its perfect. I just finished the final episode of The Wire. There was just increasingly natural interplay between them that made viewing more diverse and interesting (e.g. I mean its obvious all three of them enjoyed it way too much for a normal gangster who just wanted someone out of their way- and Marlos final shot licking the blood off his sleeve just about proves that that guy was about to go on a black Manson killing spree had the story logically continued from its stopping point. I became hooked from the first episode "Mermaids Singing" which is done in 2 parts, with each episode my enthusiasm for the show also grew. During the political campaign in Season 3, when Royce was facing pressure from Carcetti, there is a subtle glimpse into the racial component. The Witcher: Blood Origin 's ending serves as setup for The Witcher season 3, revealing the truth behind the Conjunction of the Spheres and another prophecy that's sure to have a profound influence on Ciri's life. August 19, 2002. Anyway, thats all. Im literally addicted to this show, and watch it through at least 3-4 times a year. Melvin Wiliams passed today RIP! I dunno. Even though I dont like those gay fags fuckin each other but thats the world we live in so no problems. Notable killings and machinations in the drug world were the talk of the streets. Great. Now, the fifth season was a bit of a problem. Have just finished re-watching the whole series. David Simon, a reporter for the Baltimore Sun for thirteen years, is the executive producer of HBOs The Wire. For me, the series is not about the individual seasons. President Snow is Katniss Everdeen's tyrannical enemy, and while he may appear untouchable for most of The Hunger Games he has a secret weakness. The political corruption, the cronyism, the back-asswards views on racism which prevent all minorities from getting a real say in anything lest they be deemed racist- and most agonizingly, the completely screwball insanity that is the PG County school system is exactly like the way you depicted life in Baltimore. Robson Green in Wire in the Blood. Photograph: ITV ITV has axed Robson Green drama Wire in the Blood after six years in what is seen as the latest cost cutting move by the network. Once I learned that wrestling was faked I began to wonder what else on TV, or in print, was fabricated or enhanced. Then the Lewinsky story broke and dominated, and I lost even more faith. Watch with Acorn TV. Im not. Lets be clear, though. I wanted catharis toobut I was raised on ER. Liz (Michelle Randolph) suffered a miscarriage in the finale, and it now seems she may be unable to have children again. Cocaine Bear is based on a true story but the events especially the ending are very different. McNulty, Frank Sobotka, Carcetti (at least in season 3), Colvin and Prez). But if I dont play how can I and everyone else fix the rules? Circling back to the journalism angle in season 5 and your above article, it is sad that so many people missed the real commentary about the total lack of journalistic integrity- not just in Bmore but in the whole country. I guess Cedric Daniels, Stringer Bell and Bunny Colvin tried with horrible results. Norris brought an adult, feminine, vulnerability to her role as Carol Jordan. We do what we do and people are free to react as they will. The school system has been teaching test questions to improve No Child Left Behind scores, and to protect the mayor politically and to validate a system that is failing to properly educate city children. The suits in Chicago are running scared. Its tremendously unfortunate a potentially amazing show was turned into a cute little art project. Season 4 seemed to show Carcetti living up to their ideals, and it *did* seem like things were getting cleaned up. I did have a question though that I hope you could answer. All in all, you really gave us a lot to think about. I knew that in a general sense the overarching theme was the demise of quality of news journalism, but finishing my binge of the season tonight (after having avoided the show for years fearing it was over-hyped and couldnt live up boy was I wrong!) 6 Apr. I sincerely believe S4 is the best season of any show in existence and overall, The Wire is the best-told story Ive ever experienced in television. You win. It's quite dark, with just enough wit to keep you from falling over the edge into the great abyss. Ha! The show is bases on the books written by crime novelist Val McDiarmid. I was wondering, What does it take to become an officer of (And yes, I got the theme. I got my invitation late in the mail and I may as well just see all the videos and photos and banter about it on peoples social media profiles. 2008. Awards If you didnt dig it, then you didnt dig it. Not as cavalier as his "Touching Evil" series; his "Wire in the Blood" character of Tony Hill is much more reserved, quirky, and, being a criminal profiler, is more internalized with his processing of information. The creative and honest mind of the writers is put on the screen with a quality job of directing. 7.2 (359) Rate. Well now, its been a week sinceThe Wires final episode and a certain calm has descended, leaving a little less agita and a little more reflection. A moment for one last question: Also starring Hermione Norris (MI-5) and Simone Lahbib (Loch Ness), these dark and twisty mysteries are "brilliantly edgy" (SFGate.com). since 2010 ive been watching the wire every year (2 tiems this year mind ) Ive tried many times to get family and friends into it and it never happens which really upsets me very much, quite simply the wire has the best charaters, the best acting and defo the best script ever. Reprinted with Permission. Dont even know where to start, and I dont think I can critique anything about this show because it critiques itself. Grim. To argue about whether the drama had become arch or unsubtle? To debate whether Gus Haynes is more of a hero than Bunny Colvin? Copyright 2018 David Simon. We said what we wanted to say and now everyone else is entitled to talk back without some counterbitch finding them. Dr. Hill comes up with detail after detail about the perpetrator, without any more explanation of how he did it than Sylvia Browne, psychic, ever gives. Well played. But wait Marlo had to head back to those corners to be himselfthe individual. Some shameful shit right there. Hi there, I read through a few of your articles here. Im watching Treme now. A great newspaper does this routinely on a multitude of issues, across its entire region. Its quite apparent that todays 24 hour news cycle is entirely based on sensationalist impact stories. There are multiple scantily clad young women who get brutally murdered. While very formula driven and somewhat unbelievable at times, particularly with the characters often going it alone to catch the bad guys, it is entertaining and very "bingeworthy"! It would be better if he was slick like the Will Grayham character in red dragon. The plots, moreover, are taut and well-written. His rogue decision to stage serial killings was believable but Bunks toothless response and using Lester and his involvement to give credence to Jimmys scheme went beyond the pale. Its a subjective matter that isnt worth a good argument, especially if, like me, you dont see the seasons as distinct but cumulative. Damn I needed that lad to have a happy ending! Although its one of my favorites, the only things in common with "Wire" are forensic psychologists profiling murderous sickos, and helping the police catch 'em. I certainly read that last post and thought thats angry. See if you can purse your lips any tighter or hold your nose any higher. i do not like hyped up shows, because of an innate sense of superiority which makes me believe than anything that other people like cannot be good. I just wish more Americans were still capable of thinking. I would want us to argue subjectively about public policy and social issues. I feel better about missing the plot about The Baltimore Sun newspaper missing important stories, now I know that the pros missed it too. The "Jordan" character was specific to the McDiarmid book "Torment of Others", of which the episode was derived. In the confrontation that follows, Adam shows him the photographs he took The man who plays Tony Hill, the psychologist, is great. Its especially shameful that the media did not pick up on this. Then when people point out the garbage it becomes oh-so esoteric. I was leaning more towards something karmic, but its clear that many of the characters did not get what was coming to them. However, of the many detective series that my wife and I have watched, British, French, Scandinavian, Icelantic, this series has the sickest, most graphic murders in every episode. This is an entertaining series currently available on Acorn TV. Season five was the weakest season imho. But he was sincere in his grief. And yeah, he gave the more-with-less talk to maintain morale and it rang a hollow because at this point, buyout upon buyout, the grey ladies are down to bone already. Wire in the Blood is one of the most important and valuable series ever produced for television. And no, I think season five achieved its goals as the other season, with me being no closer to the world of journalism than others on our writing staff were to the other worlds depicted. To have the city editor saying such things would have been, well, arch. Buy SD $1.99. The finale was weak/unsatisfying: I feel that the people who express this opinion dont quite understand the type of storytelling that you were going for. In one of the best scenes of the series, Regarding the final season, was there any sort of fake serial killer or fake serial criminal real-life story that inspired you? This show mattered and it still does. That was the critique. Thrilled at the fact that you made him irredeemable, because the reporters who do that shit truly are that way. Love it. Uncovered. Imagine all the fun they could have conflicting professionally, not to mention romantically, vying for Jobson's attention and favors! If season five didnt work for you, then it didnt work for you. An eccentric psychologist, with zero social skills, and a smart and charming female detective come together in Bradfield, England, to solve cases that no normal policemen could ever. The Jordan/Fielding character played a large part. It was a great work of art. Brought up to believe in hard case police work, her world was turned upside down by Tony's presence. I worked at a newspaper with a POS liar who made up quotes, and the editor was obsessed with him and looked the other way (on the fake quotes and also, grossly, sexual harassment). I think it is, but Id like to hear your opinion on this. The writing was a train wreck, the characterization limp, the acting and plotting, shameful and shameless both. Robson Green is a great talent, in spite of what his fellow Newcastleian had to say above. Ultimately, thank you for such an epic drama! The world is still debating the relative merits and detractions of the final episode of Vince Gilligans meth-world saga Breaking Bad, with some quarters feeling I wanted to like this show, really, and Robson Green is an interesting actor, but it just doesn't cut the mustard for me. Thank you for your ridiculously worthwhile contributions to humanity. Not that your intention with this blog was to do that. At least the stakes matter. A police psychologist pursues a serial killer who tortures homosexual victims in increasingly gruesome ways. Nice piece written here but my only real issues with season 5 While in the bathroom, Lawrence and Adam try to stage a scene wherein Adam fakes choking and dying after smoking one of the cigarettes dipped in the corpses poisoned blood. When one actor leaves a show and is replaced. You wanna say so on the producers blog, no worries. The story the music the acting is just so damn beautiful. In series 4, Ms Norris has left the show and Simone Lahbib as Inspecter Alex Fielding has the dubious job of reining in Hill. I am your new lord sovereign of buried, latent, subtextual argument. You wanna explain where the argument is inconsistent? I have no idea how you were able to pick one quote out of the whole episode, to show at the beginning because almost every line is of substance. This show, its impact, the things its talked about directly and indirectly (as shown above) has along with all that impacted me, and I feel like Ive got enough influence from this show alone to myself sit down and write like Ive been wanting to do, but not just any writing, but writing thats thoughtful as well as entertaining, and also writing that matters. Thanks for this. The depth, the acting, the setting, the pace, its all spot on :p. I love this show. While he is cold and calculating, from the moment we met him Omar has a big heart and made decisions based on his emotional reaction. I didnt get hooked by Treme or the mini serie with a mayor though. Thanks for a great series and compelling stories and characters, in what was often a pretty bleak scene. Its so damn realistic. The excellence of Seasons 2 and 5, and how they are an integral part of the whole, are particularly revealed on repeat viewing. Enter DI Alex Fielding, Simone Lahbib. Thank you for such an amazing show. There is always a player in the on deck circle, even when the final out is being recorded. I meant To say Roger Twigg. Its not likely to change our reasons for telling the stories we do, but neither is the criticism necessarily invalid or unwarranted. As it is, I argued, any good journalist will if he or she loves the business follow this story and wince at the stories systematically missed, the undiscovered and unreported tales of the city known to viewers for four seasons.
